First post, not even sure if the picture is showing., but got this notice from BMW on my 2015 328 (sedan, M Sport, 6 speed) yesterday.

Kinja'd!!!

I guess it could have been more BMW if it added: “water pump, radiator neck, anything else cooling system related”. I’m not super concerned though, it is a lease and will be going back to the dealer in June.

Brief intro: Been lurking for quite a while, live in Houston, hobby is running and kids (4 of them), work in oil and gas, DD is 2015 GMTK2 Suburban. Past cars include B5 Passat, E39 540i 6 speed, E36 328 5 speed, ‘05 Acura TL, ‘87 Acura Legend 5 speed, OG Ford Explorer.

If you don’t take it in, can they punish you at turn in?

It’s not a recall, it’s just a notice that they’re extending the warranty on the thermostat.

It’s not a recall item. They’re admitting that the item failed in so many cars that they are willing to fix it under a warranty for ten years from the in-service date. Not the first time BMW has had to do this for a faulty item. My previous ‘09 535 had something like a 10 year warranty on the turbo and the high-pressure fuel pump because they were very prone to failure.

They’re just extending the warranty on that specific part. It doesn’t appear to be a recall.

It’s likely that something was proven to be wrong with the design or quality of the part, so BMW has been advised by their lawyers that an ounce of prevention is better than a hundred-million-pound class action.

A BMW with a cooling system issue? Unprecedented.

What everyone else said. I did read all 5 pages they sent though, because I don’t trust the first page.

The funny part is we have no idea how the t-stat is failing or what else might get taken out with it when it goes.

If it fails closed and the car overheats and smokes the motor, or goes over-pressure too quickly for the cap to compensate and the expansion tank hoses or gaskets/orings let go, or if the t-stat disintegrates and sends shrapnel into god knows where, or if it leaks and fries electronics... None of that is gonna be covered if you’re otherwise out of warranty. They will however give you that completely thermostat they promised.

Oh, and if you’re a preventative kind of person I’d bet anything that if you went to the dealer tomorrow and asked them to replace the thermostat now, they wouldn’t do so under warranty because the part has not yet failed. They may however offer to “Help you out” by offering to provide the part for free if you pay for the labor out of pocket... If you’re lucky...

Any idea if it includes any older models?

I had the thermostat replaced in my E90 about 2.5 years ago.

Pretty sure this notice only applies to certain F31 cars. I’ll check it again when I’m back at home tonight and post back if it looks like it applies more broadly.

I’ve also got a 2009 E92 328i which only has 63000 miles on it, I was thinking about doing the water pump and thermostat as preventative maintenance.

Never a bad idea. I did the water pump on my 540 as preventative...which was fine until the radiator neck broke off a couple months later.

All reasons why a) it is leased and b) it is going back in June. My serious wrenching is on hold until the kids don’t want anything to do with me.
